UP Vargas Museum, in cooperation with CANVAS (Center for Art, New Ventures and Sustainable Development), presents The Next Chapter and Only in the Philippines on July 10, Friday, 4pm at the 1F Galleries and the 3F Galleries. Both exhibits run until July 31 (Friday).

The Next Chapter celebrates CANVAS’ first ten years as it displays pieces that reflect their belief that art can and must serve a purpose. Thus, the exhibit is a continuing affirmation of the organization’s visions and principles.

Only in the Philippines showcases the 7th year of CANVAS’ annual “Looking for Juan Banner Show”. This year, the theme aims to reflect national identity as the phrase “Only in the Philippines” connotes pride for Filipino activities, attitudes and aspirations or the frustration and exasperation over systems and situations that we know are corrupt, unjust, or simply not good enough. Through the wide array of images the works portray, the exhibit invites the viewers to see the richness and diversity of our culture with the assurance that pride and frustration are two sides of the same coin and that are necessary elements to motivate us into steering our nation into a brighter, peaceful, and just future.

The Center for Art, New Ventures and Sustainable Development (CANVAS) promotes greater awareness and appreciation for Philippine art and culture principally through exhibitions and projects that, not only showcases artworks from some of the best young contemporary Filipino artists around, but also lead to the publication of books, prints, and other merchandise that make these artworks more accessible to more people.
