Revisiting Modernity | Urban Legend
3/F Galleries
The UP Vargas Museum in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) opens a double exhibition on 23 February, 6:00 PM, at the 3/F Galleries.
Archival photographs from the collection of the Sentro ng Arkitekturang Filipino probe the building projects initiated by the Marcos regime in Revisiting Modernity to project an image of progress and national renewal. Through various images, the exhibition presents how the Marcos administration consciously utilized state architecture to legitimize its authoritarian regime and propagate the myth of modernity among its subjects.
In Urban Legend, New York-based Filipino photographer Lawrence Dizon Sumulong explores the Parthenon-inspired Manila Film Center, one of the buildings constructed at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Complex. Sumulong’s works focus on the current effort to revive the forgotten film palace as the site of the Amazing Show, a Las Vegas-style theater act featuring transvestite performers.
