The program is designed to give students an overview of museum practices from collections management, curation and exhibition coordination, and developing and implementing educational programs. Interns will be exposed to the following:

1. Curatorial work

• Interns will work with the staff in preparing for contemporary art exhibitions in April and May

2. Education

• Interns will be involved in the planning phases of the Junior Museum Guides Workshop. They will work with the staff in designing new activities and participate in the graphic design and layout of workshop kit and other collateral
• Interns will co-facilitate the Junior Museum Guides Workshop (workshop for students ages 9-14 years old)
• Interns will be trained as docents/museum guides for permanent and temporary exhibitions

3. Collections Management

• Interns will assist in handling artworks; learn to accomplish basic reports to monitor the entry and exit of objects and fill out condition report forms

Successful applicants are required to complete 120 hours of museum work for the covered period.  Internships are unpaid.  A certificate will be issued upon completion of the program.

Join artist Emmanuel Garibay on 13 March 2013, Wednesday, 2:30 – 4:00PM at the Vargas Museum as he shares his insights and practices on art, society, and divinity and how these are reflected upon in his works for the exhibit Walang Sinasanto.

The retrospective exhibit Walang Sinasanto embraces an entire range of allusions and references that straddle the realms of the mundane and the divine. It can denote the loss of sanctity, deeming no one or nothing sacred; it can also describe a condition where authority and hierarchy are challenged, or imply a condition of social and moral decadence. This set of meanings opens up a rich plane for discourse, which Garibay elaborates on his canvases.

From 1:00 – 2:30 PM, on February 1, Friday, the artists and curator of “The President’s Office” exhibition will have a walk through of the show at the UP Vargas Museum. This will serve as a venue for discussing the works and the exhibition.

You are cordially invited to START 2012 – Science and Technology for Art: Conserving and Recording Tangible, Intangible, and Natural Heritage, a conference and training program on 3-7 September 2012 at the University of Sto. Tomas.

With funding from the Official Development Assistance Grants for UNESCO Activities, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science & Technology in Japan, and the Advanced Imaging Technology Laboratory, Kyoto University,  the conference will feature plenary talks from international experts and short courses on the topics of conserving and recording tangible, intangible, and natural heritage.  Local organizational partners are the National Museum, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines, the University of the Philippines, and the UNESCO National Commission.

The events will be from 3-7 September 2012. Venue will be at the University of Santo Tomas and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. The conference and training program will be open to researchers, collectors, artists, students, custodians of heritage, media, as well as the general public. Participants may choose to join the following events:

The workshop will demonstrate the capabilities of Niji-S, a digital scanner developed by the team of Prof. Ari Ide-Ektessabi of the Advanced Imaging Technology Laboratory (AITL) of Kyoto University. It shall also foster discussions on possible collaborations for recording and research on cultural heritage.

Prof. Ide-Ektessabi’s team has been commissioned to perform several digitization campaigns around the world and in the process, he has had extensive experience in the intellectual property rights of data derived from cultural heritage objects.

Because of its mobile, configurable design, overall cheaper operation cost, and open platform, the Niji scanning system has been used in Japan, Korea, China, Egypt and the United Kingdom.   The objects that have been digitized are a wide variety of artifacts from different civilizations and empires like Pharonic period, Coptic period, Islamic period, Greco-Roman period, Tang era, Edo era, the Renaissance, Meji era as well as the modern era. To date, more than 3000 important cultural heritage objects from different UNESCO World Heritage sites have already been digitized using the Niji scanning system.
